International Women’s Day 2010
8th March 2010
Celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day with a salute to today’s most successful women…
International Women’s Day will be celebrated around the globe today with rallies, seminars and assemblies taking place to honour the 2010 slogan: Equal Rights, Equal Opportunities: Progress for All.
Conceived in 1910 and launched in 1911, International Women’s Day is the brain child of Clara Zetkin, the then leader of the 'Women's Office' for Germany's Social Democratic Party, who thought that if every country marked and celebrated an annual 'Women’s Day', it would help bring about her demands for better pay, voting rights and an end to gender discrimination. Go Clara!
100 years later the day is now used to celebrate the achievements of successful women worldwide and inspire ladies everywhere. And what a successful bunch we are! From Kathryn Bigelow's timely triumph at last night's Oscars, to Michelle Obama and Sarah Brown's new style of glam-power, women are breaking new ground every where you look.
So with so many successful women around today, who do you admire the most? Check out the LF team's choices below!
“Meryl Streep – winning more awards than any other actress in history, she is widely regarded as one of the most talented and respected movie actors of the modern era. At 61 she continues to inspire women worldwide.” - Hilary, editor and MD
